The first instinct upon getting home from groceries shopping is always to store all perishable items into the fridge as quickly as possible. However, there are some food items that you should never store in the refrigerator despite such popular belief. Even though refrigeration is an effective way for preservation, but for some food it can actually lessen the flavour, cause texture change or worse, speed up the food spoilage and sometimes eaten wrongly can cause diarrhea or stomach bloating..

Honey

Honey should always be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight as refrigeration will cause your luscious honey to harden.Never store these food in the fridge

Bread

Some may think that keeping bread in the fridge could make it last longer. However, this is a mistaken belief because refrigeration will dry out the bread very quickly. The next time you want the bread to last, try freezing it.

Nuts and dried fruits

It is advisable to store them in a cool dark spot and refrigeration is not necessary.

Berries

Fresh berries have short shelf life, so it is best to avoid prolong refrigeration and should be consumed within a day or two of purchasing.

Herbs

It is a false natural instinct to keep herbs fresh herbs in the fridge because refrigeration will cause it to wilt faster. Instead, putting them in a water-filled glass jar on the kitchen counter will keep them fresh and crisp.

Onions

Always keep in mind that onions should be stored in an area with proper air circulation, so avoid the refrigerator. In addition, onions and potatoes should not be kept together as this will make the onions rot.

Bananas

Bananas taste better and healthier when they get riper but refrigerating them will halt the ripening process. Therefore, storing them in the room temperature is the best, where the loss of potassium content can be prevented to provide more health benefits.

Salad dressing

Most salad dressings and condiments which are vinegar and oil-based should be stored at room temperature while cream, yogurt or Mayo based dressings should be refrigerated.

Potatoes

Potatoes should be kept properly in a dry paper bag outside of the fridge as refrigeration will eliminate its flavour. Plastic bags must not be used as it can promote growth of mould due to moisture entrapped inside.

Avocado

Only store avocados in the fridge once they are ripened. Refrigeration will help to keep them fresh for up to about a week. Browning of avocados will occur if exposed to the air, so it is best to store them as a whole.

Ketchup and soy sauce

The high concentration of vinegar and preservatives in saucy ketchup and soy sauce help to keep them fresh at room temperature. They are also fine without refrigeration even after opened.

Cereals

Morning cereals will taste just as good outside the fridge.

Hot sauce

Hot sauce including other various condiments such as Worcestershire sauce, ketchup and sriracha can be stored in the pantry outside of the fridge. These condiments are good to last for up to three years.

Tomatoes

Storing tomatoes in the fridge will obliterate all of its flavour and texture. Placing the tomatoes in a paper bag at room temperature will help to make them ripen faster.

Pickles

Pickles have high amount of preservatives, hence they can stay fresh even outside of the fridge. For a proper storage, keep the pickles in an open space with good air circulation.

Coffee

Refrigeration or freezing will change the flavour of the coffee drastically due to condensation. Both coffee beans and coffee grounds should be stored in an airtight container in your pantry.

Melons

To maintain an intact flavour, keep the melon at room temperature. This is because refrigeration will promote the breakdown of the melon, resulting in powdery and grainy texture. However, they should be stored in the fridge after cutting, for a maximum of three to four days.

Winter squashes

Regardless of an acorn squash, a butternut or a spaghetti squash, they should be kept at room temperature. This way the flavours will be kept intact and the squashes will last about a month or longer.

Oils

Putting oils in the fridge, whether they are olive oils or vegetable oils will cause them to thicken and look murky and cloudy. These oils should be left at room temperature except for nut-based oils which must be refrigerated.

Peanut butter

Peanut butter is suitable to be kept at cool dark spot and they need no refrigeration.

Garlic

Refrigerating garlic will reduce its lifespan drastically because it reduces the flavour and a refrigerated environment will promote development of mould. After breaking the head of the garlic, do store them loose and consume them within 10 days.

Jam

Jams and jellies contain a high amount of preservatives, therefore they are fine to be stored without refrigeration even after opening.

Stone fruits

Stone fruits for example peach cherry and plump are best kept aside in the kitchen without refrigeration until they have ripened and ready to be eaten.

Pepper

All peppers including red, green, yellow or even chili peppers do not need refrigeration. Storing them in a paper bag in a cool place will make them last longer.

Fruits

Fruits like avocado, apples, bananas, citrus fruits, berries, peaches, apricots and nectarines should be stored outside of the fridge. This is because refrigeration causes loss of flavours and textures. However, to be able to enjoy a crisp bite, it is advisable to refrigerate the fruit for 30 minutes prior to eating. Keep oranges, lemons and limes at room temperature and loosely from each other to prevent growth of mold. Only store a ripen or cut avocado in the fridge and never refrigerate the under ripe ones.
